The short version: Kani is built from the ground up to protect your privacy. Your conversations stay on your device. We don't collect, store, or sell your personal data. Period.

Our Privacy Philosophy

At Kani, privacy isn't a feature — it's our foundation. We believe your thoughts, questions, and conversations with AI are deeply personal. They should remain yours alone. That's why we built Kani differently from other AI assistants.

Unlike cloud-based AI services that store and potentially analyze your conversations, Kani keeps everything local. Your data never touches our servers because we designed it that way from day one.

What We Collect

  • Your conversations with AI models
  • Your context notes or personal preferences
  • Files or documents you share with the AI
  • Behavioral data or usage patterns for advertising

Data We May Collect

To provide and improve our service, we collect minimal, anonymized data:

  • Account information: Email address for authentication and billing
  • Usage metrics: Aggregate, anonymized statistics (like total API calls) to manage capacity
  • Crash reports: Optional, anonymized error reports to improve stability

How Your Data Stays Private

Local-First Architecture

All your conversations, context notes, and preferences are stored locally on your device using encrypted storage. We literally cannot access this data because it never leaves your device.

End-to-End Encrypted Sync

If you choose to sync between devices, your data is encrypted with keys only you control before leaving your device. Our servers see only encrypted blobs — we cannot read your content.

Transparent AI Requests

When you send a message to an AI model, Kani shows you exactly what's being sent. No hidden metadata, no tracking identifiers — just your prompt and the context you've chosen to include.

Third-Party AI Providers

When you use AI models through Kani (Claude, GPT, Gemini, etc.), your prompts are sent directly to those providers. Each provider has their own privacy policies:

Important: We route your requests through our API to manage subscriptions, but we do not store the content of your prompts or responses. The AI provider receives only what's necessary to process your request.

Your Rights

Because most of your data lives on your device, you're already in control. You can:

  • Delete your data: Clear conversations anytime from within the app
  • Export your data: Take your conversations with you in standard formats
  • Close your account: Request deletion of any data we hold (email, billing info)

Children's Privacy

Kani is not intended for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Our upcoming Family plan will include supervised accounts with additional protections for younger users.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this policy from time to time. When we make significant changes, we'll notify you through the app and update the date at the top of this page. Your continued use of Kani after changes take effect means you accept the revised policy.
